The Old Luggage Van updates the camping coach tradition by offering quality self catering holiday accommodation, sleeping 4. It is located on a delightful site adjoining the station platform at St Germans, in South East Cornwall, UK. There are good views of passing trains on the adjacent GWR Plymouth to Penzance main railway line. In an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Special Scientific Interest, the Old Luggage Van makes the perfect base for your bird watching, cycling or walking holiday. We include lots of books on walking in the carriage, and the coast path is only a short bus ride away.
Passenger Luggage Van No. 1353 went into service in December 1896 having been built for the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) at Eastleigh. It was recovered from a site at Wadebridge, Cornwall in 1995 where it had been since being withdrawn from service in August 1932. It is now mounted on a reconstruction of the original chassis and has been restored externally to the original colour scheme. The inside has been sympathetically converted into wonderful, cosy holiday accommodation - you will love it wether you are interested in trains or not.
The railway station at St Germans was built in 1858 to a design by Brunel. Although the main railway station building is now lived in by your hosts, the platform is still in use - served by over 20 stopping trains per day.
The van measures 24 feet by 8 feet and offers the following facilities :

* kitchen area with fridge, hob and microwave/conventional oven
* lounge diner with TV/DVD and hi-fi converting into a double or two single beds
* bunk room with 2 bunks (top bunk suitable for child or agile adult)

Description of area/town/village
|
St Germans is a quaint historical village only a few miles from golden beaches, and the pretty fishing ports of Looe and Polperro. On the main railway line, our guests are offered £25 cashback when arriving by public transport.
St Germans is a small village with a population of 600. It has a great village pub, The Eliot Arms (01503 232733 - Open 11am-last orders) serving Cornish ales and excellent food all day.There is a village vegetable and provisions stall, and a new community shop and post office will be open from 29th May 2010. It will offer provisions, papers, post office services, etc. There is also a childrens playpark which had a complete makeover in 2009 with brand new equipment.
Among the sites of the village are the towering viaduct above the quay, sixteenth century alms houses, the Norman parish church formerly the cathedral of Cornwall, with Burne Jones stained window, and Port Eliot house and gardens. Port Eliot (01503 230211 - Open 1st Mar - 30th Jun) house and grounds opened to the public for the first time in 2008. Home to the Earl and Countess of St Germans, the house is one of the most magical and hidden stately homes.
